What the collaborative process looks like
Consultation
Initial consultation is free and offered via phone or video. This will be an opportunity to share ideas on pieces and styles that inspire you, material you would like to consider, etc.
Initial Design
Three hand drawn designs will be presented based upon our consultation and the inspiration and ideas you provide. There is a $500 non-refundable design fee to begin which will be subtracted from the initial deposit once a design is agreed upon. These initial designs will often evolve into models and mock ups.
Lumber
With your vision in mind and our designs in hand, lumber is selected specifically for your project with attention to the details of the grain, character, and colour of the wood. Even this early in the process, I am envisioning how these lines will follow a curve or what might be a beautiful bit of character to feature.
Creation
I use a combination of approaches to the making of your custom piece. I begin with the power and efficiency of machine work for milling, cutting, and joinery but also integrate shaping, finishing and some custom joints done with simple hand tools and patience. I strongly believe that your piece should appeal to all of your senses and it’s important that not only your eye is drawn in but that your hands find pleasure in interacting with it.
Finishing
Whether you are looking for a high build finish or a natural, minimal look, we will find the correct materials to bring out the best in your piece. I complete each piece with a hand-rubbed finish that will bring glowing warmth to the wood, at once emphasizing it’s beauty and protecting all surfaces.
